1 Out Of Every 4 Blacks/ Latinos Living In Poverty In USA
From: New York Daily News
More than 3 million New Yorkers are among the 46.2 million Americans trapped by the tanking economy as the U.S. poverty rate hit its highest level in 27 years.
The stunning 15.1% figure for 2010 meant one in every six Americans - and New Yorkers - were living below the poverty line, the U.S. Census Bureau announced Tuesday.
The number, up from 14.3% in 2009, was the highest since 1983 as U.S. household income dropped by an average 2% last year.
"It's disappointing that the poverty rate is going up," Mayor Bloomberg said. "We have got to make sure that globalization and technological automation doesn't take away the ability of people to be self-sufficient."
The depressing numbers add up to trouble for President Obama, whose 2012 reelection campaign will undoubtedly center on his handling of the nation's fiscal nightmare.
The President is pushing for a $450 billion job creation package to get the economy back on track as the national unemployment rate stays above 9%.
The amount of people living in poverty was the highest since the bureau began tracking the figures 52 years ago - and the third straight year the number increased.
"Rather than sit around and complain about it," added Bloomberg, "government's got to do something about it."
In New York State, more than 3 million people are living beneath the federal poverty line: $11,130 per year for one person, $14,218 for couples, $17,374 for a family of three and $22,314 for a family of four.
The New York number was 16% living in poverty, a jump from 15.8% in 2009 and 14.2% in 2008.
"Families are struggling to put food on the table, and they don't have the purchasing power to help the economy recover," said Isabel Sawhill, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution.
Working-age Americans - people ages 18-64 - were battling to keep their heads above water. The number living in poverty increased to 13.7%, up from 12.9%, the figures showed.
Since 2007, the number of men pulling down full-time, year-round paychecks dropped by 6.6 million - and the corresponding number of women fell by 2.8 million.
The U.S. poverty rate between 2007-10 grew more than any three-year stretch since the early 1980s, a further indication of the long and lingering effects of the recession.
The grim economic situation also led to an increase in doubling up - households with an extra resident 18 or older, many moving back with their parents.
By the spring of this year, 5.9 million people ages 25-34 were sharing space with parents, compared with 4.7 million prior to the recession - an increase of 2.4%.
There was even more bad news for the American worker and his family - the average household income was $49,445 - a 2.3% decline.
For blacks, the number of people living in poverty increased from 25.8% to 27.4% in 2010 while the number of Hispanics jumped from 25.3% to 26.6%.
Child poverty was up as well, from 20.7% to 22%, the statistics showed.
The spiraling numbers could have been worse if not for government safety-net programs that extended unemployment benefits after layoffs.
The extra cash spared about 3.2 million people from falling into poverty, while Social Security kept more than 20 million Americans afloat, the Census Bureau noted.
"If these programs are cut back in the future, poverty rates are likely to rise even more," warned public policy professor Bruce Meyer.

Gucci Mane Back In Jail For 6 Months
From: RGF
After only three months on the street, Gucci Mane is back behind bars.
In April, Gucci was jailed on numerous unspecified probation violations, which stem from a 2005 aggravated assault case. That month, however, the Atlanta rapper was also arrested on charges he shoved a female passenger from a moving vehicle back in January. While Gucci served time on probation violations from the '05 case, he had yet to be sentenced in the January incident until Tuesday (September 13).
The rapper's attorney, Ashutosh Joshi, confirmed to MTV News that Gucci has been sentenced to six months in jail after pleading guilty to two counts of battery, two counts of reckless conduct and one count of disorderly conduct for pushing a woman out of his Hummer back on January 28.
The "Wasted" MC is currently locked up in Georgia's DeKalb County Jail, where his lawyer hopes he will be allowed to serve out his entire sentence. "It's a case that we knew about, that we expected would come about at some point," Joshi said.
State Court Judge Eleanor Ross sentenced Gucci to six months and three years of probation, which is to take effect after his release. As a result of his plea, the Atlanta trap spitter was ordered to complete 12 weeks of anger management courses, pay $5,091 to cover the woman's medical bills and a separate $3,000 fine. (The 1017 rapper's current sentence also satisfies the criminal damage to government property charge he was handed after kicking a cop car last year.)
On the morning of January 28, the victim, a 36-year-old Atlanta resident, was at the South DeKalb Mall, when she was approached by a male driving a white Hummer; he was eventually identified as Gucci Mane. According to the victim, Gucci asked if she wanted to get breakfast, to which she agreed before entering his vehicle. However, once inside the truck, Gucci allegedly offered the victim $150 to "go to the hotel." When she refused and asked to be driven back to the mall, the rapper allegedly leaned over to open the passenger side door and shoved her out of the moving vehicle.
According to the report, the victim "had redness on her left side/ back area." And although she had never met Gucci before, the victim stated that she was familiar with his music and "recognized an 'ice cream cone' tattoo on the suspect's face."

Young Jeezy's Security Beats NYC Gun Charges; 'Hip-Hop Police' Unit Name Revealed
From: AllHipHop
The "Hip-Hop Police" were scrutinized this morning during a court hearing involving security for internationally known rap star Young Jeezy.
Jeezy's head of security, Stephen Helin, was in court today (September 12th), over an incident after a concert featuring rapper Jay-Z at Madison Square Garden in March of 2010.
Stephen Helin and several other members of Young Jeezy's security detail were arrested after the concert on March 3rd, 2010, around 5:00AM, with at least five guns.
Each defendant was facing a mandatory minimum of 3.5 years, under New York's strict anti-gun laws, which have resulted in jail time for celebrities like Lil Wayne, Ja Rule, Prodigy, Plaxico Burress and others.
According to Stephen Helin's lawyer Scott Leemon ESQ., the specific facts of the case forced the New York County D.A.'s office to reduce the felony gun charges to misdemeanors.
"Today, right before the scheduled Suppression Hearing in New York County Supreme Court, the New York County DA's office, because of the specific facts of this case, offered the defendants an opportunity to plead guilty to a misdemeanor charge of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Fourth Degree with a promised sentence of a Conditional Discharge (requires no probation supervision) and a $1000 fine," Scott Leemon ESQ., told AHH.
Each man was licensed and had a permit to carry their guns, but only in the state of Georgia. At the time of their arrest, the guns were found in locked boxes, not on any one person.
Leemon said that prosecutors decided to reduce the gun charges to misdemeanors, due to the questionable tactics by the "Hip-Hop Police," which is now officially known as "Enterprise Operation Unit.”
"They were facing a mandatory minimum sentence of 3.5 years in State Prison if convicted of any of the charges in the indictment before the plea," Scott Leemon ESQ. said. "The defendants accepted the People's offer and the hearing never went forward. Justice Charles Solomon accepted the plea and scheduled sentencing for November 29, 2011."
The police allegedly did not want to jeopardize any ongoing investigations, although more specifics about who is being targeted was not available.
Leemon said that during today's hearing, his plan was to expose the "Hip-Hop Police" and whether or not Young Jeezy's security detail's Constitutional rights had been violated.
Prosecutors decided to drastically reduce the charges, resulting in the cancellation of the hearing.
"The hearing was scheduled to focus on the methods and means used by the Hip Hop Police (a/k/a "Enterprise Operation Unit") in the arrest of the defendants in this case; and, specifically whether the stop of the van and seizure of evidence was legal under the law in the State of New York," Scott Leemon told AHH.
Young Jeezy was not available for comment as of press time.
